Eat Your Vitamins - How to Get Your Vitamins from Food

We've probably been told or have read many times that we need to get more vitamins. What most people mean when they say this is, we need to take some sort of multivitamin pill, or supplement. These are good ways of getting your vitamins, but its not the most natural way. We can get most, if not all of our vitamins from the food we eat! Not only is this healthier, but easier and cheaper!

Foods to Eat for Better Sleep

We all would probaly like to get more sleep, or sleep better at night than we do now, right? I mean, what is bad about getting more sleep? Nothing! So why don't we sleep more or have a good night's sleep every night? One of the culprits might be in your diet. There might be foods lacking from your diet that are hindering you from getting sleep, or there might be foods that you do eat that are hindering your sleep. Eating better means you will sleep better and sleeping better means you will feel better!

There are a few important things to watch out for when it comes to your diet and sleep. Potassium, Magnesium and Melatonin.  What are these things? They are the keys to actually falling asleep and staying alseep for longer. Eating foods that have these things in them will aid you on your way to dream land!

Quite a few foods contain the above-mentioned keys to sleep success. You might actually be surprised at some of the items on this list!

Bananas are full of potassium! They also contin the amino acid, tryptophan, which breaks down into melatonin and serotonin ( hormones that promote relaxations) in the brain. Eating a banana before bed can help you calm down and fall asleep easier!

Another food that contains this wonderful amino acid, tryptophan, is walnuts! Eating a handful before bed can help you sleep better!

Besides walnuts, Brazil nuts( best source of selenium-another key to better sleep) and Almonds ( high in potassium and B vitamins) are some great nuts to eat before bed to help sleep better and longer!

Carbs actually are pretty beneficial when it comes to sleep. Eating whole grain carbs like whole-wheat bread, oats, brown rice and quinoa raise blood-sugar levels, which plays a role in regulating your body's sleep/wake clock. This helps you feel energized when you should and sleepy when you should!

Spinach, Kale and other dark-leafy greens are really great for sleep! They are packed with calcium, potassium and magnesium. Ever been told to drink a glass of milk before bed? Calcium is just another one of the keys to a better night's rest! You will actually benefit more from eating these dark greens for your calcium intake over milk! Have a nice big salad for dinner and sleep like a baby!

Chickpeas or Garbanzo beans, are really helpful in the getting-to-sleep process. They contain B vitamins, which are needed in producing melatonin!

Kiwi Fruit and Cherries are two more fruits that are excellent for better sleep. Kiwis are rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium( all very important for good sleep) and Cherries are a really great source of melatonin!

None of these foods are hard to find or expensive. Which means you have no excuse( unless you are allergic) to eat more of them! Try adding more of these foods into your diet and see and feel the effect they have on your sleep! Not only will you be sleeping better and longer at night, but you will feel better and more energized during the day! And plus, who doesn't want an excuse to eat more delicious food?

I hope you have found this post to be helpful! Everyone wants to get better sleep, so please share this post with your friends and family to help more people get the sleep they need and deserve!

How to Build a Healthy Grocery Cart- Part 1

Everyone goes grocery shopping in some way or another. We all have to go out and get food to eat when we are at home. Its these trips to the grocery store that can either help or hinder your healthy diet. At a restaurant it might be easy to choose the healthiest option, but what about at the grocery store? How to you walk past those boxes of cookies, crackers, bags of chips, candy bars and soda? Learning how to say "No" to those things is extremely important for staying on track with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Having a healthy grocery cart isn't always as simple as it sounds. Somethings might seem healthy, but they aren't really as healthy as they sound. Learning how to be a better shopper, will help you have a healthier diet!

In Part 1, I will go over Where and When you should shop and What you should have in your cart! In Part 2, I will go over what you shouldn't have in your cart, and some money-saving tips you can use on your next shopping trip!

Where to Shop
You don't have to go to fancy health foods stores to find healthy food! You can shop at whatever grocery store is convenient and available to you, all you have to do is know where in the store to shop! You've probably heard it before, but its worth mentioning again- shop around the perimeter of the store. This is where the fresh food is!
The inner aisles also have good things to offer, you just have to be more careful. These aisles are also laden with the processed foods that can be very tempting! When shopping these aisles, the only things you want to add to your cart are things like whole wheat flour, beans, grains, dried fruit and nuts and seeds. Stay away from the processed and packaged foods that are full of chemicals, additives and preservatives!

When to Shop
There are a few times that you shouldn't go grocery shopping. 1) When You Are Hungry! Being hungry at the grocery store tends to lead to unhealthy choices! If your stomach is growling, how hard is it for you to resist the chips, cookies or candy bars? Always make sure you are full and satisfied and every thing should be good!
     2) When You Don't Have a List. Having a grocery list makes it easier for you to get everything you need, and leave everything you don't need. When you go without a list, you might buy things you don't need or you might forget things you do need! Make a list, stick to it, and you grocery shopping will be more successful!

What to Buy
There are a few things that should always be in your cart! Making sure that you always have these staples in your home will insure that you can stick to your healthy diet!

Fruit and Vegetables should always be in your cart. In our home, bananas, apples, bell peppers, onions,  celery, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, oranges, lemon and limes are just a few of the things we almost always have! The seasons also changes what it available! Figure out what your staples are and then try some new things! Pick a new fruit or vegetable each week to try!

Starches like rice, quinoa, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, whole grain pasta, bread and tortillas, beans, and lentils are also great staples! We always have at least one of these things ( if not all of them) in our home! These are great things to have because they are cheap, filling and healthy! Try them all to discover which ones are your staple!

Proteins are also something that should be in your cart. For me, as a vegan, my protein comes mainly from the starches, and things like leafy greens. But, things like tofu, tempeh, and veggie burgers are some great sources of veggie-protein. Of course, if you do eat meat, then things like fish, chicken, eggs and dairy can be added to your shopping list! Just stay away from things that promise "Low Fat", or "Natural Flavors" because this usually means more sugar, chemicals or additives!

Healthy Fats can be found in nuts, nut butters, nut milks, avocados and seeds. We always have these in our home and they are a great way to make sure that you get the right kind of fat in your diet. We prefer almond and coconut milk and almond and peanut butters, but there are a wide variety out there to choose from, and I'm sure you'll find a favorite!

Oils aren't something that I see as real "health" food, but if you are going to use them, I suggest olive oil and coconut oil. These are the two oils that we keep in our house because the flavors are fairly neutral and they can be used outside the kitchen as well!

Spices and Seasonings are all up to personal taste, but there are a few things to look out for when choosing spices. Look out for "flavor blends" that might contain added sugar or salt. Go for a salt free blend and add in the salt to your own taste. Also, a lot of spice blends can contain MSG, and you want to stay away from those! Read the label so you know exactly what you are getting!

There are, of course, so many other things that could be added to this list. A lot of it depends on what kind of life you lead, what diet you follow, and what kind of food you like! The more you shop, keeping this list in mind, the more personalized and healthy your shopping list will become!

In Part 2, I will go over What Not to Have in Your Grocery Cart! Things that really aren't that healthy and should have no place in your grocery cart!

I hope this post will help you, and that you'll stick around for part 2 (coming soon!)! Please share this post, and my blog, with your friends and family to help them live healthier lives!

10 Ways to Become Healthier this Spring

Spring has sprung and with it comes life, color and warm weather! There are many reasons to love the Spring time and so many ways to enjoy everything that Spring means! Spring is also a great time to do some Spring Cleaning in your house, diet and lifestyle!

Spring always gets me motivated to get my healthy lifestyle back on track. Sometimes our healthy efforts fall away during those cold winter months when the last thing you want is a workout or a cold smoothie! Getting back on track in the Spring is a great way to feel and look your best for the warmer months to come!

I wrote a 3 part series of blog post last year all about Getting Ready for Spring and I hope you will check out those post after you read this one! This post is going to be easy changes you can make to your life to help get your healthy lifestyle back on track!

1. Get Moving!
We've all heard it before, but thats becasue it really is so important! Exercise is so key to having a healthy body now and in the future! It has so many benefits that you should never leave it out of your day! Get up, stretch, go for a quick walk or just walk in place for a few minutes. Even the smallest amount of exercise is enough to keep your body in tip-top shape!

2. Smoothies!
I love smoothies and smoothie bowls, but I have a hard time eating them in the winter months! I love getting back into them in the Spring and Summer! They are so good for quick meals or snacks and are a great way to get tons of nutrients into your diet! You can pack so much health into a smoothie its crazy! Try adding leafy greens, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and even herbs to your smoothies to add extra health benefits!

3. Sunshine!
During the cold months we tend to spend alot of time indoors, away from the sun. When Spring finally shows up, its important to spend time soaking up the sun's rays! We gain some much needed vitamin D from just a few minutes out in the sunshine! Just make sure to wear some sunscreen so you don't get burned!

4. Raw Foods
You might have heard about the Raw Food movement. Its getting pretty popular, and for good reasons! Raw fruits and veggies have a lot of nutrients that are lost in the cooking process. While cooked fruits and vegetables still have plently of health benefits, the raw versions have even more! In the winter its hard to find good quality fresh produce, so we tend to go for the cooked versions. Now that the weather is warming up, make sure to add lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet!

5. Ditch the Packaged Foods!
This one doesn't apply just to the Spring time, but its a good way to have a healthy diet all year long! Processed and packaged foods contain alot of added things that we don't need in our diet. While some are healthier than others, its always best to stay away from anything that comes in a box or package! Not only to most of them contain added sugars, chemicals and additives, the packages fill up the land-fills! Its better for you and for the planet if we stick to homemade over packaged foods!

6. Stretch!
While exercise is imporant, stretching is also important! Its important to stretch before you exercise because you need to warm up and loosen up your muscles. This will prevent you from hurting or pulling a muscle. Stretching after a workout helps you to cool down and relax your muscles. A full workout of stretching, like Yoga, is also really good for a low-impact way to keep your body active! Next time you go for a workout, make sure you add in a few minutes of streching before and after for a healthy body over all!

7. Essential Oils
Some people don't use essential oils and some do. Those who do know the wonderful benefits of the oils. I have a blog post about essential oils that goes into more depth on how and why to use them. Adding just a few of the oils into your daily life can have a huge impact of your day to day health, mood and happiness!

8. Sleep!
Getting sleep is important all year round, and most people don't get enough of it! Sleep allows our bodies to rest, heal and cleanse and when we don't get enough sleep, our bodies don't do enough resting, healing or cleansing. Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep each night, or take a nap during the day to give your body the much needed rest it deserves!

9. Get in the Kitchen!
Its easy for those with a busy lifestlye to fall into the habit of eating packaged, processed, and pre-made foods. While this might save time, it doesn't make for a healthy diet. Like I said before, most packaged foods contain things you do not want in your body, so its imporant to stay away from them as much as possible! Meal prepping is a great way for you to have healthy meals in a flash! Also, cooking and baking your own food for you and your family is so much fun and rewarding!

10. Eat!
I know it might sound strange, but one of the best ways to keep your body healthy is to eat! Eat enough of the healthy foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts and you will find yourself in the best state of health you have ever been in! Too many people under eat or starve themselves in the hopes of gaining the perfect body! The 'perfect body' is a body that is healthy from a diet rich in the healthy foods and has plenty of exercise!

I hope these 10 ideas are helpful to you! I suggest you pick one thing a week to work on, and after just a few short weeks you will have a super healthy lifestlye! Each one of these points are important, so don't skip or over look one because you don't think they apply to you! Everyone can have a healthy lifestyle, even you!

Sharing these tips and tricks with your family and friends will help our world become a little healthier each day! Taking care of our bodies is an important job, one that shouldn't be taken lightly!

Ocotber is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is a wonderful month for so many great reasons! The weather starts to cool down, the days get shorter, the colors change, fall food becomes popular, Halloween , and October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

To be honest, I don't have a lot of knowledge about breast cancer, other than the fact that it is a terrible disease and it claims so many lives! Since it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to look into Breast Cancer and really get a better understanding on what it is!

In my researching and reading up on breast cancer, I came across this post from Bankers Healthcare Group  it really helped me understand the disease better! They shared some awesome information about Breast Cancer ,like, how many lives it claims, the different things that can  put you at a higher risk of getting breast cancer, and so much more! I wanted to share some of the post with you here!

Isn't this so informative? Thanks so much to the Bankers Healthcare Group for putting up this post and helping me understand Breast Cancer better!

What Can You Do To Protect Yourself From Breast Cancer?

Breast Cancer is no joke, and we want to avoid it at all cost! No one wants to go through having breast cancer, so it is very important to educate yourself on prevention! I am no expert on breast cancer or the prevention of it, but I found some great and helpful tips and I'll share them with you!

Diet
Having a healthy diet is super important in cancer prevention! Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, Kale, Tomatoes, and Carrots are all veggies that can aid in breast cancer prevention. Staying away from Alcohol is also a must-do for many reasons, including cancer prevention.  Green tea is a great source of antioxidant and help to aid in breast cancer prevention. Foods high in omega-3s like walnuts and flaxseed also are known to help prevent breast cancer.

Breast Feed Your Babies!
Studies have shown that women who have breast fed their babies have a 4% lower risk of getting breast cancer.

Stay Active
Not only does exercise keep you healthy and fit, but it also helps to keep you at a healthy weight. Being overweight has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer by more than 3%.

Education!
The more you know about breast cancer, the better equipped you are to prevent it! Knowing what risk factors are in your life, and your families' cancer history is a great place to start!

I do not claim to know a lot about breast cancer( as I said before) and you should totally talk to a professional if you have serious concerns!

If you want to check out the original post from Bankers Healthcare Group, you can go here.

Please share this post with your friends and family to spread the love of healthy living and the knowledge of Breast Cancer Prevention!

Fall in Love with Fitness

I love the season of fall so much! All the colors, the cooler weather, the seasonal food, cozy days... I could go on and on! To me, the first sign of fall is when the leaves start to change into the brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges! I think Fall is such a beautiful time of year, and it gets me in the mood of all sorts of things!

One of the things Fall gets me in the mood for is working-out outside! Here, the cooler weather makes for such nice workouts, that I look forward to them more and more! Lately, my go-to workout has been running, which I used to dis-like with a passion! Now I love to run, and am falling deeper in love with every time I run! We have a treadmill in our garage, so when the weather is cool, I open up the garage doors and workout in the cooler air!

With every new season comes change, and a chance to start something new! When ever the season, month, or year changes, I always get motivated to start new, start fresh, or make new goals to strive after! Fall is a great time to start new health and fitness goals because it's a great time to get outside, get active, and become healthier!

But, how do you get started? How do you start down the road to a healthier life? My advice is, start small and work your way up. 'Rome wasn't built in a day' after all! Making small changes, instead of big ones, helps you get used to them and become more comfortable with them.( For example) Going from a fast-food diet to a healthier, homemade meals diet over night can be a big change, but starting slow with...maybe one meal a week homemade, and working your way up from there is so much easier and will help you stick to it!

Food First!
I personally think that, if you are starting out fresh in a healthy lifestyle, that diet is the first thing you should change. It can be the hardest part for some, and the easiest part for others, but nevertheless, I do think its the most important part of a healthy life! How can you expect your body to be able to start being more active if it doesn't have good, healthy fuel(food) to keep it going?! Here are a few things you can do to start eating healthier!

1. More Water! Try and drink lots of water everyday! Not only does this keep you hydrated, it also helps you feel full longer, helping you not over eat!

2. Less Meat, More Veggies! If you read my Portion Control   , blog post, you'll know that only 1/4 of your plate should be meat, another 1/4 should be grains, and the rest should be piled high with veggies! Practice this the next time you eat a meal, and you'll be amazed that you can still be stratified, even with less meat!

3. Eat at Home! I know this isn't so easy for everyone, but eating at home is a great way to insure that the food you are eating is healthy! Making your own meals lets you know just what goes into your meals!( By the Way, I am not talking about premade store bought meals!).

There are lots more tips and trick to getting your diet on a healthier track! If you would like more, check out Clean Eating  , and Healthy Habits.

Get Moving!
Second to your diet, exercise is also very important to having a healthy body. Most people are far to sedentary, which is why we have so many people with health problems( which is another topic all together!). Getting up and moving, even for a short time  every day or so, will keep you fit, healthy, and happy! Here are a few ways to add exercise into your daily life!

1. Walk! Its really that simple, just walk! Walk to work or school( if you can), take the stairs, park a little further from the store than normal, or just take a walk! Walking is such a relaxing exercise, you won't even know you are getting a workout in!

2. Short but Effective! Doing short, yet effective workouts every morning or night( I like to do them before my shower at night!) is a great habit to get into! They can be little things like: 50 Jumping Jacks, 50 Squats, 20 Sit-Ups, or 10 Push-Ups, 30 Lunges, 40 Jog-in-Place( to give you a few examples). Like I said, start small and work your way up!

3. Workout Buddy! Having a workout budding is a great way to keep yourself on track! Find a friend, or make a new one, and set goals with each other. If you work or go to school together, walk together during lunch, or something like that! Pick a day of the week to meet and go on a jog/run. Have fun and you won't dread those workouts!

My blog is full of workout tips, workouts, and more, so check them out!

I hope you enjoyed this post and that it helps you start fresh this fall, with a healthier lifestyle! Remember, Fall isn't just about the treats, pumpkin spice lattes, and sitting on the couch, but it is a great time to get up and get active and healthy!

Clean Eating

Having a clean diet is a sure way to have a healthy body! A clean diet is, in my opinion, the best way to eat a healthy, balanced diet!

What does it mean to eat clean? To eat clean is simply to eat foods that aren't highly processed or sprayed with chemicals, free of refined flour and sugars and saturated and trans fat. Sugar loaded drinks like sodas and juices, along with high-calorie foods with little or no nutritional value are to be avoided.  Instead you eat 6 meals a day (Three small snacks and three medium sized meals), always eat breakfast, eat foods that contain healthy fats, proteins and carbs, rely on fruits and veggies for fiber, vitamins and enzymes, drink plenty of water and practice portion control!

Eating clean isn't really a 'diet' with an end date. Its a complete lifestyle change! It needs to be done gradually so you can get used to the changes that will happen when you change to a cleaner way of eating. There aren't really 'rules' to follow, just use common sense and remember a few key things!

Key Things to Clean Eating:
- Buy Organic, Locally Grown and Non-Sprayed fruits and veggies whenever you can
- Avoid processed and packaged foods
- Cook at home whenever you can
- Buy Organic and Non-GMO whenever you can
- Drinks lots of Water!
- Stay away from Refined sugars and flours
- Practice Portion Control
- Have three balanced meals a day with three light snacks throughout the day

So, now that you know the basics, how do you get started? How do you start to convert to a cleaner diet?  Well, like I said earlier, it is best to do it gradually. I suggest starting by cleaning out your fridge and pantry of the foods that aren't 'clean'. Then, start practicing portion control and a balanced plate. Next, find out where you can buy organic, Non-GMO, locally grown, etc. foods. A farmer's market can be a great place to go as well! Make small changes in your meals at first. Start by cutting out sodas and juices one week, then the next week cut out processed sugars and carbs. The next week maybe start cooking and pre-making your meals and always remember to drink a lot of water! Go at your own speed and make the changes in the order that works for you!

To make eat clean easier, I want to share with you a few tips and tricks to eating clean and having a healthy lifestyle!

Always eat breakfast! When you wake up, your body has been without food for at least eight hours, so you need to eat!
Try to not eat within an hour of going to bed. While you sleep your body does some cleaning and detoxing that can't really be done if there is a ton of food in your stomach.
Eat snacks. Eating small snacks in between meals keeps you metabolism going.
Fill up on fruits and veggies. Not only to they contain great nutritional value, but they are low in calories!
Cook at home. I can't stress this enough! Making your own meals is the best way to know exactly what goes into your food! For those who don't have a ton of time, pre-make your meals a head of time!
Always keep a snack with you. Having an apple, handful of nuts, or any other healthy snack on hand is a great way to keep you from eating the unhealthy un-'clean' foods.
Always serve veggies with a meal. Having a salad, sautéed veggies, or raw veggies with a meal makes the meal more filling without being too calorie dense.
Go with what works for you. Don't feel like you have to follow every clean eating rule out there! You will find ways that work for you and some that don't! Remember, its a lifestyle change, so you have time to grow used to it and make it perfect for your life!

You can find plenty of healthy and clean recipes here on my blog! There are recipes for breakfast like, Chocolate and Peanut Butter Muffins , Smoothies  , and Pumpkin Muffins  . Recipes of Lunch and Dinner like Oven Roasted Peppers and Onions and Honey Roasted Carrots . Also there are tons of dessert and snack recipes like, Guacamole  , Cherry and Chocolate Icecream  , and Frozen Hot Chocolate  ! Look around and let me know which one you like best!

I hope this post helps you and encourages you to convert to a cleaner way of eating and living! Follow the blog for more healthy post! Also, follow the blog on Twitter @ Spinachisgood and on Pinterest @ Hannah Plunkett

Thank you for visiting my blog and please check back for more post on all things healthy, and share with a friend!
