The What, Why and How of Meditation
June 16, 2017
With all the stresses, noise and business of the world today, practicing meditation or any form of relaxation is critical to a health body and mind.
I've heard about Meditation of a long time, but I don't think I really knew what it was or why it is so popular. The more I have learned about the practice or mediation , the more I haven understood why so many people use it everyday!
What is Meditation?
Meditation is described as practices that self-regulate the body and mind, thereby affecting mental events by engaging a specific attentional mind set....induces a mode of consciousness either to realize some benefit or for the mind to simply acknowledge its content without becoming identified with the content.
Wikipedia- Meditation
Meditation is use throughout the world, in many different religions and beliefs. Everyone one's practice is different and their reasons for meditating are as well, but for the most part, they all have the same result.
Why Meditate?
Gain Inner Peace-
Think of your body/mind as a room. As you go about your daily life, your room (body/mind) gets cluttered, messy and unorganized. By practicing meditation, you are cleaning up your room (body/mind) and this allows you to think clearer and regain your inner peace!
Increase Self-Awareness-
Millions of thoughts run through our minds everyday, and it can be easy to become lose ourselves in our thoughts and the business of life. Meditation gives clarity to your thoughts, helps you realize you inner desires and allows you to just process your thoughts.
Become Calmer-
By allowing your body and mind to relax and process your thoughts through a practice of meditation, you become calmer and more grounded in yourself and your life.
Gain Inspiration-
When we clear our minds of distracting thoughts and are able to think clearer, we can become more inspired. This can be inspiration for work, personal projects of just encouragement for the day.
Improves Sleep-
Removing the clutter from your mind and relaxing your body through meditation helps you to become quite and fall asleep and stay asleep longer. No more waking up in the middle of the night and having your mind consumed with work, family or life problems!
Health Benefits of Meditation
Increased Immunity-
Relaxation appears to boost immunity in recovering cancer patients as well as the average person. An Ohio State University study sowed that progressive muscular relaxation reduces the risk of breast cancer and breast cancer reoccurrence as well as boost the natural killer cells in the elderly.
Relieves Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)-
Studies have shown that,When those suffering from IBS began practicing a relaxation meditation twice a day, their symptoms of bloating, diarrhea and constipation improved significantly.
Lowers Blood Pressure-
A Harvard Medical School study found that meditation lowered blood pressure by making the body less responsive to stress hormones. When the body is under a lot of stress, it can cause a rise in the blood pressure, and mediation can help relive the stress.
Anti-Inflammatory-
Stress leads to inflammation, which is linked to heart disease, arthritis and asthma. Relaxation can help prevent and treat such symptoms by switching off the stress response. Meditation is not only good for your mind, but also your heart!
I really hope you have found this post helpful! I know that I was inspired by my research to add a meditation practice into my daily routine! Hopefully you've learned something and it can help you better yourself and live a healthier life!
