If you missed my last post ( Our Jamaican Vacation Part 1 ) you might want to go back and read it, so this post makes more sense! If you did catch my last post, its great to see you again! Lets continue on my Vacation to Jamaica!
We left off at day 4-6 in my last post. Like I said, we spent those days at a church convention. It was on an orange and sugar cane orchard. We ate so many oranges while we were there! They were delicious!

Staying Healthy While Traveling
July 22, 2016
My family and I have been doing some traveling lately, and there have been times when it has been hard to find healthy vegan food. Maybe some would say, that on vacation you let your healthy diet slide a little, and I can agree with that to some point. Eating healthily makes me feel my best, and who doesn't want to feel their best on vacation or while traveling?
Staying healthy while traveling doesn't mean you can't have a fun time. It means that, while you are relaxing, sightseeing or just hanging out on vacation, you can look and feel your best! Eating healthily on vacation or while traveling might take some planning, some prep, and some determination, but it is totally doable for everyone! There is no reason you should let your travel plans get in the way of your healthy lifestyle!
Prep Work!
Whenever we go on vacation, I like to do a bit of prep before hand, so that I know I will have healthy snacks no matter what! My family and I like to pack nuts and dried fruit trail mixes, hummus and veggies, fresh fruit like apples, oranges and blueberries, and I usually throw in some almond milk as well! I also like to make a few things to bring with me! On our last trip, I made Vegan Granola , and Brownie Batter Date Balls, and they were the perfect thing for a healthy snack, or breakfast if the place we were staying at didn't have a healthy option! You can make whatever you like to snack on and bring it with you! Granola bars, muffins, chia puddings and homemade hummus are just a few great options! Planning ahead and doing some prep work isn't hard, and it will help you stay healthy while you're away from home!
Eating at a Hotel
Eating at a hotel can be a bit tricky, especially if you have an allergy or you have a specific diet. For me, finding a vegan option isn't always a walk in the park! Most hotels usually have oatmeal along with toppings like nuts and dried fruit. They also usually have some sort of fruit, whether its a cut up fruit salad or just apples, oranges and bananas. On our last trip, my go-to breakfast was oatmeal, nuts and dried fruit, cut-up banana and a splash of almond milk(that I had brought with me). Hotels might also have some cereal, toast, muffins, pancakes, yogurts and fruit juices. Few of these options are healthy, let alone, vegan, so I usually avoid those foods. I do, on occasion, go for a cereal (that I know it vegan) and some almond milk. I also try to eat a lot of fresh fruit for breakfast. This not only starts by day off right and helps me to hydrate, but it also insures that I do get some fruit in, if I don't have the option to later in the day. I also have black coffee every morning and most hotels provide that! Starting your day off right is so important, and you shouldn't give that up just because you aren't at home!
Eating Out
Restaurants are also tricky, but there is usually at least one healthy option on the menu. As a vegan, it can be extra tricky to find a healthy and substantial meal at a restaurant, but I have developed a few tricks! I usually scan the menu and look at all the options. Some times there is a great option in the appetizer section like guacamole, salsa and hummus can be found on a lot of menus. Salads can also be a good choice, just make sure they are loaded with cheese, fatty dressings, croutons, bacon or other unhealthy toppings. If salad is the only option, I always ask for the dressing on the side ( go for a vinaigrette) and ask for no cheese and not meat/eggs. Sometimes there are veggie sandwiches, veggie burgers, or baked potatoes on the menu. My favorite of those three would be the potato, and it is also the healthiest option. The sandwich or burger is also an okay option, just ask for no cheese and mayo. Another thing that can be healthy are pizzas. If you order a pizza with no cheese and no meat, it is a very healthy option! Just ask to load up the pizza with veggies and you have a winner! At Mexican restaurants you can easily order veggie fajitas and eat it like a salad on a bed of lettuce or like a burrito bowl over rice. Tortillas are okay, but not the healthiest choice. Also, stay away from fried tortilla chips as they are vey high in fat! Pastas might not be the healthiest, but if you find yourself in that situation, there are some healthier options. Pasta with marinara sauce and veggies can usually be ordered, even if its not on the menu. If there is absolutely nothing on the menu that is healthy, I just go for whatever is vegan or vegan friendly!
Snacking
If you have brought your own snacks, this shouldn't be such a problem. Just back yourself a backpack with snacks and water bottles and you are good to go! If you haven't brought snacks with you, don't lose hope! You can usually find fruit, trail mixes, and dried fruit at gas stations, drug stores or grocer stores that are quick and easy to grab. Juices and smoothies can usually be found at gas stations, coffee shops, and drug stores. Whether they are homemade or packaged, just make sure they aren't made with dairy products and added sugars! You can also grab snacks at your hotel's sundry shop if you get desperate! No matter where you are and what you are doing while traveling, having good snacks on hand is always a good idea! I would always go for the homemade option first, but you can easily find snacks out and about too!
Hydration
Drinking water is important whether you are traveling or not! Planes are especially dehydrating, so you want to make sure and drink lots of water before, during and after your flight. Walking around sight seeing or shopping can get you dehydrated pretty quickly too! No matter what you are doing while traveling, staying hydrated is key! I usually travel with a reusable water bottle that I can refill whenever I need too!
Exercise
Staying active while on vacation or traveling can be pretty tough. Not only is it hard to find a place to workout, you don't always want to exercise! If you are walking around sightseeing or shopping, or spending time swimming, hiking, canoeing, or doing other active activities, you don't need to worry about finding time to workout! But, if you are sitting in meetings, riding in a car, plane or train, enjoying time in the spa or laying out by the pool all day, you probably should find time to get your body moving. A lot of hotels have workout rooms that you can use. Just a simple, 30 minute workout can make all the difference in how you feel the rest of your day!
Traveling isn't always easy on our healthy lifestyle, but with some planning, dedication and will powder, you can stay healthy while you are away from home! I hope these tips will help you the next time you are away from home!
I hope this post has been helpful to you! Please share it with your friends and family to help others live a healthy lifestyle!

Heat Safety for the 4th of July!
July 1, 2016
Summer is here and the 4th of July is just a few days away! This means spending lots of time outside, under the sun and in the heat. This can be dangerous and even fatal if you don't know how to protect yourself against the sun and heat. With a few simple tips, you can enjoy the outdoors, summer fun and 4th of July celebrations, and stay healthy and safe!
We all love to be outside, and during the summer we spend more time outside than inside! Being outside exposes us to the sun's rays, the heat, and the bugs. Learning how to protect yourself from those things will not only help you have a more enjoyable time, but it will keep you healthier!
Wear Sunscreen!
Sunscreen is something you should never forget when spending lots of time outside! Sunscreen is so important because it protects you from getting sun burned! Not only are sunburns painful, but they can even cause health problems later in life! Wear at least SPF 15 and reapply every 30-40 minutes. Remember, when your swimming, the lotion doesn't last as long. Also, the sun reflects off the water and can burn your more quickly. Wear some sunscreen, and enjoy yourself without worrying about getting burned!
Drink Water!
When you are outside, in the sun, you will get dehydrated very quickly! Being dehydrated can be a very serious health problem if not taken care of right away. Your best bet is to prevent it from even happening! Drink lots of water ( plain water, other drinks don't count) before, during and after your time outside to protect yourself from becoming dehydrated! Signs of dehydration include headaches, thirst, fatigue, dizziness, rapid breathing and constipation. Drinking lots of water will help you stay safe and healthy in the summer heat!
Find Some Shade!
Staying outside all day long might seem like a lot of fun, but it isn't the healthy thing to do. Long exposer to the sun and heat can cause your body to be come dehydrated, fatigued and can even cause heat stroke! Find time to spend in the shade or inside for your body to cool down and to get a break from the sun. Also, wearing sunglasses and a sun hat can help keep your body cool and protect from the sunrays. While being outside is a blast, spending time in the shade keeps your body healthy!
Bug Repellent
Bugs are annoying and their bites can be painful. They can turn a fun family picnic or pool party into a uncomfortable experience! Applying bug spray, lighting citronella candles in the area, and keeping food and drinks covered up will help with the bugs and help to make your experience much more enjoyable! If you aren't keen on the idea of chemical-filled bug sprays, there are lots of natural options out there!
Pet Safety
While keeping yourself safe in the summer is important, you shouldn't forget about your animal friends! They same rules that apply to humans apply to animals as well! Make sure you provide plenty of water and shade and NEVER leave them in a hot car or direct sunshine. Keeping your pets safe in the summer is just as important as keeping yourself safe!
Wear Proper Clothing
Wearing the right kinds of clothes can make your outdoor activities so much more enjoyable! Lose, light weight and light colored clothes are the best. Dark colors attract the sun's rays while light colors repel them. Lose clothing allows your skin to breath and helps to keep your cool! Make sure you are wearing the right thing when you are outside to keep you cool and comfortable!
Don't Over Do It
In the summer, the heat and sun can be brutal. It is important to know when enough is enough. Exercising, working or just playing in the heat and sun can be dangerous if you don't know how to protect yourself and when to call it quits. Don't spend more than an hour outside without some water, sunscreen, and spending time in the shade.
I hope this blog post is helpful and keeps you and your family safe this summer! Everyone wants to have a fun time outside, celebrating and playing, but its important to keep yourself safe and healthy too! Take time to plan and prepare and keep yourself safe and your outdoor fun will never be ruined or interrupted!

Post Workout Snacks
June 19, 2015
Eating a healthy and nutritious snack after your workout is a great way to reenergize your body and help it grow and become healthier! It is important that your after-workout snack is healthy, nutritious and full of the things your body needs after your workout!
Water is an important pre, during, and post workout drink. Make sure to drink lots of water!
Peanut Butter(Or any Nut Butter) on Apples. I love this snack, and its a great post workout snack because it replenishes your body with protein, natural sugars and fiber!
Banana Ice Cream. This healthy snack is pretty popular right now, so you won't have a hard time finding a recipe. This is a great snack because bananas have potassium which helps your muscles keep from being sore.
Protein Shake. Having a protein shake or smoothie is a great way to cool down after a workout and get some protein and fiber back into your body!
Trail Mix. Most trial mixes are a great post workout snack. The ones with candy in them, well...not so much, but the others are great! They have nuts, dried fruits and often seeds which gives your body a lot of important nutrients! You can even make your own Trail Mixes to met your preferences!
Oatmeal. Oatmeal is a great source of fiber and protein. Top it with nuts, dried and/or fresh fruit for a great post workout snack or breakfast!
Ham and Cheese on Crackers. This snack is great for a post workout snack because it contains protein, fiber, sugars and fats! Just make sure you are using good quality and healthy meat, cheeses and crackers!
Eating a healthy snack after your workout is a great way to maintain a healthy body! I hope these snack ideas have given you inspiration for choosing the right post workout snacks!

Staying healthy during the holidays
December 22, 2014
Lets be honest, its can be hard to stay healthy during the holidays! There is the almost constant temptation of sugary and high calorie foods and then its seems so hard to stay motivated to workout! Here are a few tips that I hope will help us all stay healthy during the holidays!
#1 WATER!
There is often so much going on during the holidays that we forget to drink enough water! Not drinking enough water can cause you to become dehydrated which will make you feel lazy and sluggish. Drinking water ( and the water in hot cocoa, coffee, etc. doesn't count!) will help you feel more energized, give you clearer skin and keep you hydrated!
#2 WORKOUT
Its hard to find time to workout when its cold outside and there is a warm fire to sit by and drink hot cocoa, but its important that you make time! Play some Christmas tunes while you workout, find some Christmas-themed workout moves or find a workout buddy! If you have company and you don't feel like you can leave them to workout, maybe go to the mall ( Shopping is Cardio!) and walk around for an hour or two. Its important that you get moving! Lying around all day will make you feel lazy and lower your motivation level.
#3 INDULGE
Are all those Christmas treats tempting you? Well, live a little and enjoy them...in moderation! Not letting yourself enjoy your favorite treats will make you feel discouraged and deprived. Enjoy those yummy treats a little at a time. Eating one sugar cookie, one candy cane, a cup of cocoa or a piece of fudge won't set you back or make you gain a ton a weight, but loads and loads of them will! Enjoy in moderation and don't worry about it!
#4 VEGGIE-UP!
When is comes to your diet during the holidays, make sure that veggies are present at every meal. As long as they aren't coated in butter, cheese or grease, make sure that at least half of your plate is full of veggies. You can have the other food items like, ham, bread, scalloped potatoes and cranberry sauce, just make sure your giving some love to the veggies too!
#5 SLEEP
It can be tempting to stay up 'way past your bed time' but its so much better for your body if you make sure you get enough sleep! Sleeping in is a great feeling and, if you stayed up late the night before, let yourself have more sleep, your body will thank you! You will have more energy and motivation if you give your body the rest it needs! Bring on the Zzzzzzzzzs!
I hope these tips can help us all stay healthy and motivated during the holidays! Let me know if these tips help you and if you have any to add to the list! If you have enjoyed this post, please share it with a friend!
