What to Do and Eat in Maine- Vegan and Kid Friendly!

Recently, I made a trip to Maine with my family. We absolutely loved it! The weather was amazing, the sights unreal and the trip as a whole was super fun and relaxing! But, you may wonder what a vegan finds to eat in a seafood dominated state! Well, it actually wasn't as hard as you might think!

Okay, so Maine is known for a few things- the weather, lighthouses and seafood. I enjoyed two of those three and had no problem replacing seafood with delicious, vegan friendly food! Surprisingly, most places we went had a vegetarian, easily made vegan, option on their menu!

What to Eat in Maine

We stayed close to the coast, which was lovely! Most of the places we ate we found on Yelp , which made it super easy to choose a place we all would like!

One of the first places we ate was a pizza place called Camden House of Pizza . I asked for a veggie pizza with no cheese and they had no problem making it for me! It was quite delicious too!

After we ate pizza, we walked down to an ice cream shop called River Ducks Ice Cream . They had several flavors of dairy free sorbets and I chose the raspberry flavor! It was refreshing and yummy!

One thing I fell in love with in Maine was blueberry lemonade! You could find it almost everywhere and I had it quite a bit!

We made a trip down to Bar Harbur for the day and ended up eating supper there at a place called 59 Cottage . I ordered the veggie wrap without the cheese and mayo as well as the sweet potato fries! It was a delicious and fairly heathy meal!

On one of the chillier days, we decicded we wanted some coffee, so we searched out a near by coffee house. We found Green Tree Coffee & Tea . They roast their own coffee in house, so it smelled amazing! I ordered a mocha made with almond milk and it was the perfect drink for a chilly afternoon!

We also bought groceries and had several meals where we were staying, which cut down on cost and just made things easier for everyone to eat something they liked. Just as a side note, eating out in Maine, especially for a large family, can be quite pricy!

What to Do in Maine

Like I said before, Maine is known for its lighthouses! We went to several, my favorite being the Owl's Head Light House and the Breakwater Light House. Both of which are super easy to find and to take little kids! Also, the views are beautiful!

The Breakwater Lighthouse is at the end of a .70 mile pier. Be careful when walking down the pier because its uneven and some of the stones are wobbly!

The Owl's Head Lighthouse is super easy to get to with just a short walk up to it. Somedays it is open to go into the lighthouse, but on the day we went it wasn't open. There is also a small museum and gift shop near the light house.

Camden Maine was a small town close to where we were staying, so we spent some time there. My whole family really enjoyed the small-town feel and walking downtown. Camden has several restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, bookstores and retail stores. We went at dusk and the view off the harbor was amazing!

Out of the Camden Bay you can take schooner boat rides, which we did one afternoon. We rode the Lazy Jack II and really enjoyed it! There are several companies and boats to choose from and a few of them even offer day trips.

Mt. Battie is near downtown Camden and is an excellent place to go and hike around. You can park at the bottom and hike to the top or you can drive straight to the top to see the view! We really enjoyed it!

We look a hike up Maiden's Cliff with some friends and it was so fun! The view was breath taking , even if we got rained on as soon as we made it back to our car! Its a pretty steep and rocky hike, but my 4.5 year old brother did just fine!

Another place we went to hike was Acadia National Park . Unfortunately it was a super foggy day and we weren't able to see much of the view, but the park still looked amazing! At the base of the mountain is Sand Beach which is one of the few natural sand beaches in Maine. We really enjoyed the trip even if it was a foggy
day!

Over all we had an amazing trip to Maine and can't wait to go back! I would say that taking a trip to Maine in the summer time is the perfect way to escape the heat and get some really R&R in before school starts again!

I was so glad to find that the coast of Maine is ( for the most part) fairly vegan friendly! Its always exciting to see something you can easily eat on the menu!

I really hope this post is helpful to you, whether you are traveling to Maine soon or just curious! Traveling as a vegan can seem scary or hard, but I'm here to show you that it is far from that!

Knowing what to do, where to eat and some knowledge about the area you are traveling to makes the trip a much smoother and enjoyable experience!
