Foods to Eat for Better Sleep
November 4, 2016
We all would probaly like to get more sleep, or sleep better at night than we do now, right? I mean, what is bad about getting more sleep? Nothing! So why don't we sleep more or have a good night's sleep every night? One of the culprits might be in your diet. There might be foods lacking from your diet that are hindering you from getting sleep, or there might be foods that you do eat that are hindering your sleep. Eating better means you will sleep better and sleeping better means you will feel better!
There are a few important things to watch out for when it comes to your diet and sleep. Potassium, Magnesium and Melatonin. What are these things? They are the keys to actually falling asleep and staying alseep for longer. Eating foods that have these things in them will aid you on your way to dream land!
Quite a few foods contain the above-mentioned keys to sleep success. You might actually be surprised at some of the items on this list!
Bananas are full of potassium! They also contin the amino acid, tryptophan, which breaks down into melatonin and serotonin ( hormones that promote relaxations) in the brain. Eating a banana before bed can help you calm down and fall asleep easier!
Another food that contains this wonderful amino acid, tryptophan, is walnuts! Eating a handful before bed can help you sleep better!
Besides walnuts, Brazil nuts( best source of selenium-another key to better sleep) and Almonds ( high in potassium and B vitamins) are some great nuts to eat before bed to help sleep better and longer!
Carbs actually are pretty beneficial when it comes to sleep. Eating whole grain carbs like whole-wheat bread, oats, brown rice and quinoa raise blood-sugar levels, which plays a role in regulating your body's sleep/wake clock. This helps you feel energized when you should and sleepy when you should!
Spinach, Kale and other dark-leafy greens are really great for sleep! They are packed with calcium, potassium and magnesium. Ever been told to drink a glass of milk before bed? Calcium is just another one of the keys to a better night's rest! You will actually benefit more from eating these dark greens for your calcium intake over milk! Have a nice big salad for dinner and sleep like a baby!
Chickpeas or Garbanzo beans, are really helpful in the getting-to-sleep process. They contain B vitamins, which are needed in producing melatonin!
Kiwi Fruit and Cherries are two more fruits that are excellent for better sleep. Kiwis are rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium( all very important for good sleep) and Cherries are a really great source of melatonin!
None of these foods are hard to find or expensive. Which means you have no excuse( unless you are allergic) to eat more of them! Try adding more of these foods into your diet and see and feel the effect they have on your sleep! Not only will you be sleeping better and longer at night, but you will feel better and more energized during the day! And plus, who doesn't want an excuse to eat more delicious food?
I hope you have found this post to be helpful! Everyone wants to get better sleep, so please share this post with your friends and family to help more people get the sleep they need and deserve!

Essential Oils
September 11, 2015
My mom started using essential oils about a year ago, but I wasn't sold right away. Honesty, I though it was another one of Mom's 'things'! :)But, after using them a few times, I had more faith in them, and now I love to use them!
What are Essential Oils?
Each essential oil company has it's own standards in regards to the way them make their oils. We use a brand called, Young Living , and we love their Seed-to-Seal standards! Essential oils are simply the oils from botanicals. They can be use in so many ways, to promote healthier living in all aspects of life!
Oils I love!
Lavender: I love this one, and it's probably the oil I use the most! Here are a few ways you can use lavender to promote healthier living!

Burns: Appling a few drops to a burned area of skin can help relieve some of the discomfort.
Bug Bites and Stings: A few drops on a bug bite or sting can help to relieve some of the pain or itching.
Sleep: Smelling the oil or applying some to your sheets and/or pillows can help to calm you and help you sleep!
Thieves: This one is probably my Mom's favorite oil, for good reason too! Here are a few ways we love to use this oil!
Disinfectant: Thieves can be used to clean anything from the countertop to you hands, and it can help to disinfect the area.
Bug Repellant: Applying a few drops, or spraying it on your skin and clothing can help repel the bugs!
Cold/Canker Sores: My sister has used a few drops of this oil on her canker sores to help relieve the discomfort.
Purification: This is another one of my favorite oils to use, and I use it quite a bit too!
Acne: This is how I use this oil the most- Applying a drop of oil to a skin blemish or acne spot can help to relieve discomfort and some redness.
Insect Bites: Much like lavender, purification may used to soothe bug bites.
Stinking Shoes: A few drops into your shoes can help to, well, purify them and make them smell nice!
Lemon: This one smells so nice, I love to use it whenever I can!
Energize: A few sniffs of this oil can help to energize you and can be uplifting!
Cleaning: Adding a few drops to your cloth to clean, or diluting it in a spray bottle can be a wonderful way to get your house clean, without using harsh ingredients.
Essence Water: Add a few drops to your water for a nice, refreshing drink!
Please Note!
I am not making any health claims, but I am sharing with you the ways some essential oils can be used. They don't work the same for everyone, so some things might work for a certain thing for me, but not for you!
Obviously there are a ton more essential oils out there, so I encourage you to try a few out and learn as much as you can about them and the way you can use them! Going to a website like, Young Living, can give you some more info!

Why Exercise?
July 6, 2015
I've talked about exercising a lot in my blog post and I've posted different workouts you can do, but I haven't really talked about why you should exercise. I'm doing that right now!
If you've spent any time at all in the health-scene or read anything to do with it, you'll have read and heard a lot about exercise. "Do this workout for this, exercise this long for this" and so on. But, why should you exercise? Why is it so important to workout? Here's why,
#1
Increases Pain Resistance
The more you exercise and get your body moving, the stronger it is. And the stronger your body is, the more it is resistant to pain!
#2
Puts You in a Good Mood
Working out or exercising releases endorphins in your body. They make you happy and in a good mood! So, the saying is true "You're only one workout away from a good mood!"
#3
Help Maintain a Healthy Weight
We've heard this one before, but its so true. Exercise of any form will help keep your weight in check!
#4
A Healthy Heart
When you workout, you get your heat rate up. This causes your heat to work harder than is does when you are resting, which makes your heart stronger! A stronger heart is a healthier heart!
#5
Get Better Sleep
Working out and exercising will wear you out, in a good way, and by the end of the day you are ready to jump in bed! Going to bed because your tried, instead of because it's bed time, makes for a much better night!
So there you go! 5 reasons to exercise each day! Remember, you only need 30 minutes of activity that gets your heat rate up to count as your daily exercise!
I hope this post has helped you understand the imporanance of exercising! Please share with others and follow via email, Google, Twitter @ SpinachisGood and on Pinterest @ Hannah Plunkett
